Ink & Fire

The studio smelled of turpentine and something warmer — cedar, skin, the particular heat of a body that had been still for too long and was finally, slowly, beginning to move.

She sat at the edge of the velvet chaise, one bare shoulder catching the amber studio light, and watched him uncap the ink with the same reverence most people reserve for prayer. He didn't look at her — not yet. He never did, not right away. He let her feel the wait.

"Turn toward the window," he said, his voice low and unhurried, a voice that belonged to candlelight and late hours.

She turned. The silk she wore — barely that, more a suggestion of fabric — slid off her shoulder entirely. Neither of them acknowledged it. That was its own kind of intimacy: the things left unsaid, the adjustments not made.

The brush touched paper and she felt it — somehow — as though the ink were tracing her spine instead of the page. She had never understood how he did that: how the act of drawing her became a kind of touch.

"Hold still," he murmured, though she hadn't moved. It wasn't a correction. It was a reminder — you are here, you are seen, you are the whole world I am making.

When he finally set the brush down and crossed the room toward her, the ink on the page was still wet — her silhouette gleaming darkly in the lamplight, half-finished, perfectly imperfect. He stood close enough that she could feel the warmth radiating off him.

"You always look better than what I can draw," he said quietly.

She reached up and curled her fingers into his shirt, just above his heart.

"Then keep trying," she said.
